Mount Sinai Middle School is both an ending to an elementary course of instruction and a beginning of a secondary educational program due to its unique nature of housing students in grades 5 through 8. During these four years, our focus is for students to develop more independence and responsibility towards their own learning, become respectful of their peers and diverse backgrounds, make appropriate decisions, and be accountable for their actions. Developing students with good character and citizens is the foundation of the middle school program.
Transitioning to a middle school can be a challenging time. The teaming of teachers in fifth and sixth grade allows this to happen gradually by having two or three teachers for different core curricula. The day is structured similarly for the older students however they change classes every period during the nine-period day. Opportunities for advanced classes in Math begin as early as seventh grade with pre-Algebra. Additional opportunities for Earth Science and honors English and Social Studies occur in eighth grade.
Getting involved and partaking in new experiences is important during the middle school years. There are a wide variety of extracurricular clubs and interscholastic sports to join. If the arts are where interests lie, students can pursue music by playing in a band, orchestra, or chorus ensemble group and even participate in the school’s yearly drama production. Finding out your interests and strengths prior to entering high school assists in scheduling elective classes to work towards your future ambitions.
The middle school years are a time for growth both academically and socially. The faculty and administration work hard to make it a positive learning experience for all students.
